Maryland High School Tennis News – Digital Sports

It was the match both teams had circled on their calendars well before the season even started.

For the third straight year, the Broadneck and Severna Park High School tennis teams collided with undefeated records. The winner of the match should be on inside track to a Anne Arundel County championship, but that hasn’t been the case.

The Falcons have won the past two regular-season meetings but the Bruins are the two-time defending county champs.

“Still, this is the team we want to beat,” Broadneck coach Mike Hudson said. “I’d like to play them more often because they’re a great team and they always give us great competition.”

On Friday, the singles’ players for Severna Park dominated and the Falcons pulled out a 6-3 win.

“It was interesting because there were some matches I thought we should have won and they were a few that surprised me,” said Severna Park coach Kathy Zingler, whose team improved to a perfect 7-0 on the season.

“The singles were a huge factor, especially the girls. The No. 1 went three sets and Claudia (Ingram) has just been playing very well recently.”

Christina Harrington, a Severna Park freshman, rallied back for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over two-time county champ Michele Jordan. Harrington hurt her ankle in a match last week and it prevented her from playing in a USTA tournament last weekend.

“I just had to make sure to move a lot,” she said. “It feels good to pull it out and come back. I like having tough matches.”

Harrington may be in her first high school season, but she’s hardly a stranger to Jordan or the local competition.

“Her ability to come back means that she’s a seasoned player and not your typical freshman,” Zingler said.

Ingram knocked off Marissa Goldstein 6-1, 6-3 to sweep the girls singles matches for the Falcons.

On the boys side, senior Kevin Zingler kept his record unblemished with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Broadneck senior Stephen Woody. Zingler has yet to drop a regular-season set in two years and Woody was in his first season of playing so there were some uncertainties going into the match.

“It was a tough match,” said Zingler, who had gone against Woody during the summer. “He blew me out of the water to start the second set. He went up, 5-4, but I sort of kicked in the after burners and finished out the set.”

Broadneck’s Zach Ware and Brian Sachtjen, the Bruins’ No. 1 and 2 singles players from a year ago, have joined forces and the partnership is working out. They beat former county and region champs Ben Rosenthal and Patrick Rice, 6-2, 7-6. The second set went to a tie-breaker and emotions ran high.

“It was a big win for us but I’m sure we’ll see them again,” Sachtjen said.

Said Ware: “It’s going to give us a lot of confidence going into counties.”

Aaron Littlejohn played exceptionally well in his second match back from an ankle injury he suffered during the basketball season. The Falcons’ No. 2 singles player upended Dan Heffernan, 6-4, 6-4.

The Bruins’ No. 2 doubles duo Alex Banks and Jon Coe was dominant in their 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jake Solyst and Andrew Athans.

“Our doubles teams are just fantastic,” Hudson said. “Alex, Jon, Zach and Brian all play each other very even in practice. I really feel that’s a big strength for the team. I also think on the girls’ side that Maggie (Banks) and Danielle (Felton) were very impressive.”

Banks and Felton topped Alex Paugels and Erica Johnson, of Severna Park, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

Kathy Zingler said that mixed doubles partners Shelly Wilke and Matt Balleza had a big impact. They did not surrender a single game against Broadneck’s Victoria Handlin and Eric Pedersen in their 6-0, 6-0 win.

In the Falcons’ only doubles win, Hannah Fasick and Cayla Chandler downed Abby Powell and Julia Gruenberger, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

“I’m expecting Hannah and Cayla to keep putting up performances like that,” Kathy Zingler said.

Sports Watch Features That You Really Want

There are tons of great watches around, many of them have lots of features, so it is just a matter to pick up the main 1 or 2 features and make your search in according to these. If you don’t make a clear choice, you may get lost in the endless offers. Whatever features you get on top of the main ones will just be a bonus.

For an easy orientation I made a quick list of the main sports watch features.

Resistance to Water

The water resistance is, I would say, the most important feature of any sports watch. No matter what sport you are dedicated to, you will still need a water proof watch. Even just rain could cause serious damage. Just choose a suitable level of water resistance in according to what you do. The water resistance choice is huge and goes from about 10 meters up to 500 meters suitable for diving. These are often also resistant against salt.

GPS

Everyone who goes hiking or tracking to remote places should seriously consider a watch with GPS. GPS will facilitate you getting on the right path. But if you feel that GPS is too much of a luxury for you then definitely get a watch with at least a built-in digital compass.

Weather Features

Handy features that are related to the weather are mainly sunrise and sunset data, thermometer, barometer, altimeter or a altitude memory. These features will make your trips under extreme conditions or when hiking in the mountains even more exciting.

G Shock

G shock watches are very popular these days and no wonder. G shock watches are super resistant to all kind of knocks and shocks and makes the watch super durable.

Features Perfect For Running

Running is a very special sport when it comes to watch features. For running you will need mainly heart rate monitor and a good quality stopwatch and timer.

Watch Band

The choice of watch band will likely affect how you feeling about your new sports watch. It probably is wiser to first make your choice based on features and then get the ideal band later. A permeable watch band would be my choice, as I don’t like a sweaty wrist. A good material for sports bands is titanium – super solid, very durable and very light.

Brand Name

When choosing a sports watch you don’t want to overlook the brand name. It might seem cliche but still – the brand can be an assurance of high quality and durability. At the top of the range of sports watches there are brands like Casio, Timex, Invicta and Garmin.

Misconceptions On Sports Nutrition

The main reason why people do not achieve the level of performance they want in sports is because of poor nutritional habits.

Due to a lack of proper information, these people are having various sports nutrition myths in their beliefs. As a result, they are not eating properly because their behaviors on nutrition are influenced by these misconceptions on how they should be eating for the sports they are interested in.

As such, they tend to put too much focus on a particular type of nutrition and neglect the others. This can be rather harmful. The following are 3 common sports nutrition myths.

Sports Nutrition Myth #1

As it provides the body with physical energy, carbohydrates is the most important food component to consume. People who want to do well in sports require a lot of energy during training and other sporting events. Carbohydrates is the food component that provides the body with this much needed energy.

However, in order to perform at optimal levels, the body requires a balanced combination of different food components. Just as important as carbohydrates are other nutrients. In fact, some other nutrients such as iron and calcium are considered even more important than carbohydrates.

Sports Nutrition Myth #2

In order to get as much energy as possible, a person has to eat as much carbohydrates as possible at all times. This will provide the body with ample supply of energy during training and races.

However, if you load your body with too much carbohydrates, your tummy will feel very full and you’ll be feeling tired out even before the workout sessions begin.

Sports Nutrition Myth #3

In order to build large and strong muscles, a person has to take plenty of protein and amino acid supplements. Many young aspiring athletes in their haste to build big strong muscles take too much protein and amino acid supplements. This often results in accusations of unauthorized drug intake that frequently ends careers before they even get started.

There are no short-cuts. Building muscles and strength requires hard workouts and regular training.

Because of inadequate knowledge, many people hold such misconceptions about their nutritional needs. This often result in improper dieting. As a result, they eventually find it difficult to cope with the rigorous demands on their bodies. However, being well informed can protect one from such sports nutrition myths. This will lead to healthy eating for peak performance in sports.
